Sanctity

There is reverence
found in silent humble hours
we need not search far
to discover broad rivers
the sacred ordinary

I forgive winter
and January’s cold spells
hard ice underfoot
I forgive each icy blast
because I believe in Spring
and in daffodils

Winter branches pause
expecting us to listen
to the music of
ice slowly disappearing
a rush of sparrows in flight
promises of Spring

Unexpectedly
unimaginable change
like sudden snow-melt
muttered possibilities
as though we stood on mountains
and could see for miles
