Waiting for Isabel

Mid-winter’s wiles
Being what they were
Blustering northwest
He was thinking of Isabel
White winds whirling her
In from the snow’s cold
A storm of complexity
Cyclone hair swept high
Blazing scarf set sail
Above almond eyes
December feet shifting
Ice and heat colliding
In black faux fur boots
And a poinsettia red coat
Frozen half-smile careful
Betraying little and much
Exactly as she’d appeared
To him the first time at Stella’s
In a narrow slivered booth
Next to the basement stairs
As if poised to tumble off
An ever so fragile pedestal
Her departing had been sudden
As a quick change of weather
A quarrel on a wide bridge
He’d cycled off not daring
To cross depths unknown
But awaking before dawn
Sleep long since abandoned
He realized little had changed
And he was still waiting
For the sunlight of her return
