Water Wings

A  wry skinny kid

She whirl’d dizzily

Laughed in circles

Collapsed barefoot

Arm wrestled days

Scooped up hours

As a lost kitten

Stretched time elastic

Hummed with bees

Slumbered as daisies

Dreamed life fearless

Raced silvery lakes

Sand between toes

Limbs oh so limber

Exploring ideas old

Smooth as stones

Floating with pelicans

Until the sandbar dropped

And she paddled back

She backfloats now

Daily to Picnic Point

Taking her time

The way she used to

Along the creekbed’s

Thickets and cattails

She thinks aloud

Love is like this

Only years later

Did she realize it

After the breakup

It had taken forever

But she threw herself

With wild abandon

Into the deep end at the

Laughing aloud how

They made her start slow

Had her wear water wings

The first time she jumped

Kinda silly how life goes
