Skyward

At the pier’s edge
Shoes kicked carelessly
She strolled barefoot
As the old dock swayed
Slivered and worn
Warmed by late sun
As if reluctant to let go
Days past and gone
But she was soon away
Rowing fast upriver
Not as difficult
As she’d thought
Simply leaving
Catching a rhythm
The tug of water
Its weight heavy
As heartstrings
Plucked by a glance
Of cocooned shores
Darkly left behind
The rippling oars
Stirring new songs
Clouds skirting
Horizons shaping new
Danced her skyward
