Mile-High

Birds of a feather
they had shared
what he’d laughingly
told her was rare
a mile-high spirit
eyeing potential
Tickling dreams
and tenacity for flight
daring flying leaps
with nothing between
no safety nets of silence
no words unspoken, untrue
Defying humdrum routes
they’d trekked swing bridges
echoing across steep gorges
and had soared starry skies
And now all he held of her
close as wing feathers
was the scent of flowers
breathed from her red jacket
the one she’d left behind
the day they said goodbye
