The Arrival

In a brave new world
Out of synch in a city
A stranger incognito
Wrestling with words
Waiting at tables
Politely listening
Crumpled love letters
Oceans between them
Promising the world
He had planned to give
Sun, moon, and stars
Never telling her how
In loneliest dim hours
He feared having nothing

And then manna fell
A visa. Her arrival.
A miracle and a travesty.
For now she would know
The basement window view
Of alleyway and trash bins
His new world a shambles

And making things ready
He strung plastic lights
Stars in a fragile universe
Believing for a new start
