Winter Canvas

Brown earth fingers tenderly held us near, traced our paths
Strands of prairie grasses red, gold, brown, shearing skiffs of snow
Along a canvas highway stretched taut, wide against pale skies
Old and new, cloudless memories rushing in, familiar, silent
Strangely forgotten childhood roads, crooked paths raced
The gentle scoop of ditches about town, the joy of youth
Brushed by cattails, legs flying as the church bell rang clear
Comings and goings refound, and there amongst crumbled stones
Ancestors at rest, reminded us solemnly of the joy of life
Bid us let the curtain drop, to wave February’s songs goodbye
To fly broad-winged again, wide as roads, to journey on, and on
