Ακακία

Kingly tree
Acacia seyal’s secrets
lay hidden

Embedded words
Speaking in fiery blooms
Birthed by thirsting earth
Redwood’s sacred stem

not easily uprooted

Pierced deep by thorns
Seraphim-winged leaves
Harbor evening songs
Drinking heaven’s springs

deeply, again
great boughs upraised

in celebrations
old as skies

Knowing Every Acre

Author’s note: The acacia seyal – a tree found in Egypt and Africa – is believed to be the source of the wood used to build the Ark of the Covenant – a divine dwelling place for God’s Spirit in the time of ancient Israel. The tree’s red bark and thorns bear spiritual meaning in the Christian faith…its thorns a reminder of the suffering Christ, and its yellow blooms symbolic of  God’s eternal light. Ακακία is Greek for ‘acacia’.
